Re-register a birth

Find out how re-register a birth to add the natural father's details or after marriage of natural parents.

To re-register a birth you must complete and sign one of the forms below. Take it to the register office along with the original birth certificate.

We will check the paperwork and call you to make an appointment to come in to re-register.

Re-register a birth to add the natural father's details

If you aren't married to the father and there isn't a father recorded on the register you can add the natural father's details.

Both parents will have to complete and sign this form.

Re-register a birth to add the father

Re-register a birth after a marriage or civil partnership

If you've married the father of your child or entered into a civil partnership with him you can re-register the birth to show this change.

A form must be completed for each child with the relevant documentation.

It may also be possible to make a change to the name of the child when you re-register. If the child is 16 years old or over, you must have their written consent.

The Registrar will then contact you to arrange an appointment.

Cost

There is no fee to re-register a birth but you will need to pay for new certificates.

If you need extra certificates you can buy full certificates for £11 each at the appointment or buy more certificates after registration.

Babies born outside Torbay

If your baby was not born in Torbay you can re-register the birth by declaration.

Complete the forms and take them to the Register Office. We will check the paperwork and call you to make an appointment to re-register.

We will send the forms and new registration to the Register Office where the child was born. They will call you to make a payment for the full birth certificate if you would like one.
