What is a Personal Transport Budget (PTB)

A Personal Transport Budget is money provided by Torbay Council  to help you arrange your child’s travel to school, instead of using council-organised transport (such as a taxi or bus). 

How can I use it? 

You can choose what works best for your family, for example: 

• Driving your child to school yourself 
• Sharing journeys with another family 
• Paying a trusted adult to help with transport 
• Using public transport (where appropriate) 

What are the benefits

• Greater flexibility around your daily routine 
• More control over how your child travels 
• A consistent, familiar journey for your child 
• Can support independence for older children 

What should I think about

• You are responsible for getting your child to and from school 
• You will need a reliable plan (including a backup if things go wrong) 
• Consider time, fuel costs, and your daily commitments 
• Think about what will work long-term 

How much will I get

The amount is usually based on: 

• Distance to school 
• Your child’s needs 
• Number of journeys per week
