Update: Monday 8 July

South West Water lifts cryptosporidium boil water notice for all remaining customers

South West Water has lifted the remaining boil water notices for customers impacted by Cryptosporidium. 674 properties in the Higher Brixham, Southdown, Upton Manor and St Mary's supply zones are now all safe to drink their tap water as normal.

Following eight weeks of intensive interventions, enhanced sampling and monitoring, working alongside public health partners, the network in the Brixham area has now returned to normal and customers, business and visitors can drink their tap water safely.

South West Water will be providing guidance to customers on flushing their own pipework. Customers who are unsure about what to do or who are concerned about the impact on their water bill are encouraged to call 0344 346 2020 for additional help.

The bottled water collection stations will close at 9pm tonight (Monday 8 July).

UKHSA begins cryptosporidium outbreak study

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is beginning a study into the recent cryptosporidium outbreak in Higher Brixham and Kingswear.

UKHSA has been working with Torbay, Devon and South West Water (SWW) throughout the outbreak to give public health advice.

SWW will message customers in some of the areas affected by the boil water notice and ask them to fill out an online questionnaire for UKHSA. Customers will get a letter with a link to the questionnaire and a QR code they can scan. If SWW has their email and phone number, they will also get an email and a text message with the link.

The messages will ask customers to share the link with anyone who stayed with them between the 1 April 2024 and 15 May 2024. The questionnaire will close on 31 July 2024.

UKHSA will use information from the questionnaire to learn more about how the outbreak affected local people and how many people became sick. They would like everyone who gets the questionnaire to complete it, even if they were not ill.

UKHSA understands that some people may feel worried about following a link from a message. If anyone would like to check the link is genuine, they can email the study team at cryptostudy2024@ukhsa.gov.uk.
