Our equality duties

Find out more about our duties to meet equality, our objectives and how me meet them.

We must publish one or more equality objectives every four years. They must show how we will meet our duty to give ‘due regard to equality' and:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not, and
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not

In our objectives we must:

  • consider equality
  • understand the possible impacts of our decisions on diverse groups of people

To help us to do this, we complete Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs).

We also publish information about our workforce and our community to meet our duties. Where possible, this covers the protected characteristics which are:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

Care experience is not currently protected. However, we have committed to treating it as a protected characteristic. This is to reflect the additional challenges that people who have been in the care system face.
