The decision not to open a school, or to close early, is a major decision and is taken by the Headteacher in consultation with the School Governors.

Severe weather is usually a short-term event and it often possible for the school to remain open, even if there is some disruption from some of the site being out of use or some staff being absent.

Sometimes the disruption is so great that a school cannot open, or has to close early. This is because to open could put pupils’ and staff safety and well being at risk.

When schools close early in response to a severe weather warning, pupils need to be sent home to a place of safety. At times of severe weather, it is a good idea to have plans in place for your children to have somewhere safe to go (perhaps at the house of a school friend or relative) if you won’t be at home.
