Torwood Street is in need of full reconstruction. This means the road will be closed from Thursday 6 January 2022 and diversions will be in place for up to 12 weeks. This road was originally constructed using reinforced concrete around the time of World War Two and this was then overlaid again around 20 years ago to extend the life of the road. Unfortunately, this is not possible again so a full reconstruction is needed. This means the contractors will need to dig down over two feet, remove the reinforced concrete and then build up again, finishing off with two or three layers of tarmac. This scheme was due to take place two years ago but due to the new hotel development and other factors out of our control, this work is starting now. We cannot delay it any longer and if we did the work will take longer and will be more expensive.

The pavements on both sides of the road will still be open and you will still have access to all the businesses.

We have been and will continue to be, in constant contact with all the businesses that will be affected by these works.

Timescales

Torwood Street will be closed from the Clocktower to the lights at the junction of Parkhill Road and The Terrace.

Work will be starting on Thursday 6 January and will take up to 12 weeks to complete. It is hoped the work will be completed before the end of March.

Diversions

The diversion for this work will take you from the Clocktower along Victoria Parade and past the Imperial Hotel. Continue along Parkhill Road until you reach the junction with Meadfoot Road. Turn left down Meadfoot Road until you reach the lights with Torwood Street. Again, please think about where you need to be travelling to around this area and if there is an alternative way to get there.
