We submitted a Business Case to the Local Transport Board on 17 December 2014 and secured an in principal agreement for the funding for road junction improvements and improved cycle links in the Torquay Gateway area, improving access into the town from the northern boundary to Shiphay Junction and also at Gallows Gate. Works could start as early as September 2015.

Funding of £3.4 million was in principal agreed on behalf of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal secured from central government.

Work can now start on preparing the final case submission for final programme entry, including detailed design.

This scheme widened the Marldon Road approach to the A380 Ring Road to accommodate a lengthened two lane section, providing additional queuing capacity. The additional queuing capacity was required as additional traffic is expected to use this route to connect with the South Devon Link Road. A layout of the scheme can be seen below. The work was completed in April 2016.

This scheme will widen Newton Road into existing verges where possible, to provide at least 2 lanes in both directions from Old Woods Hill to Lowes Bridge. It will also relocate the existing bus stop outside Torbay Hospital on Newton Road, upgrade all crossings to toucans incorporated into signal phasing, and provide 2 segregated right-turn lanes for traffic heading northbound. Additionally,  the scheme will convert the existing pedestrian crossing south of the Shiphay Lane junction to a single crossing phase, and provide an improved crossing facility on Shiphay Lane to link the new hospital cycle route to Rowcroft. A layout of the scheme can be seen below. The works are likely to commence in 2020.
