Description of figure 1

Figure 1 shows 2 maps. Both maps show the percentage of children in Torbay who carry excess weight. Excess weight means that they are overweight or obese.

The maps divide Torbay into neighbourhoods. They show the average percentage of overweight or obese children in each neighbourhood. Data is from the year 2021/22 to 2023/24.

Map 1: Children in reception year

The first map shows percentages of overweight or obese children in reception year (aged 4 to 5 years).

There were more overweight or obese reception age children in Torbay than in England.

  • Torbay average: 24.8%
  • England average 21.9%

The map also shows how the percentage varies by neighbourhood. The highest rates of overweight and obese children are in Goodrington with Roselands.

The lowest rates are in Barton with Watcombe, St Marychurch, Tormohun, Ellacombe and Furzeham with Summercombe.

Description of figure 2

The infographic summarises the Torbay Healthier Weight Framework Action Plan. The Action Plan is based on the following principles:

  • alignment with national/regional policy
  • long term (10 years)
  • life-course approach
  • partnership centred
  • proportionate universalism
  • compassion approach to services
  • recognition and development of protective factors
  • system wide approach

Life course approach

The Plan adopts a life-course approach. The 3 Life course cohorts are:

  • Early years (0-4)
  • School age (5-18)
  • Adults (18+)

There are three further defined cohorts:

  • SEND children & young people
  • Adults with disabilities
  • Pregnant women

The action plan comprises 2 objectives.

Strategic objective 1: Healthier weight support

This objective is delivered through:

  • Local Authority healthier weight support offer
  • NHS weight management programmes and self support options

Strategic objective 2: Partnership whole system approach

A whole system approach encompasses both place and activity.

The infographic shows the delivery of Strategic Objective 1: Healthier weight support. Each life course cohort has corresponding themes aimed to support delivery of the objective. Current and planned delivery initiatives are organised around these themes.

The infographic shows the delivery of Strategic Objective 2: Partnership whole system approach.

The whole partnership approach encompasses all life course cohorts (early years, school age, and adults). This objective is delivered across four themes. Each theme has current and planned delivery initiatives designed to support it.

Theme: Designing built & natural environments
