Essential gas works in Paignton autumn/winter 2025

Find out about essential gas works affecting the roads in Paignton this autumn and winter.

Wales and West Utilities are due to start a 1,300m pipe upgrade programme in Paignton.

They are investing £270,000 to upgrade the current metal pipes to long-lasting plastic pipes.

The works will start on Friday 24 October 2025 and they are expected to last until Christmas.

There will be traffic management in place during these works, to ensure road users, pedestrians and the workforce are safe.

Wales and West has consulted with us about the works needed and we have agreed the following road closures:

  • Roundham Road will be closed from the junction with Dartmouth Road to the junction with Whitstone Road outside No. 3 from 24 October to 21 November
  • Whitstone Road will be closed from the junction with Sands Road to the junction with Roundham Road from 24 October to 23 December
  • Sands Road will be closed from the junction with Esplanade Road to the junction with Station Lane from 21 November to 23 December

Diversions will be clearly signed for each phase of the works and can be seen on the maps on this page.

These works are all part of Wales and West Utilities’ multi-million-pound, 30-year, gas pipe investment programme.

It was not possible to carry out the works during the closure of Sands Road earlier this year for emergency repairs to underground structures following the collapse of the highway.

The works are driven by the Health and Safety Executive based on a Risk score due to previous incidents.

Failure to complete this project before Christmas will result in it going out of standard which then poses further significant risk - potentially resulting in prosecution should an incident occur.

Installing new pipes in the area will help Wales and West Utilities move towards net zero carbon emissions and improve their impact on the environment.

It will also prepare the local gas network for the introduction of green gases in the future.

Whilst work like this is deemed as disruptive, it is essential to make sure gas keeps flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

Wales and West will do all they can to help and ensure the works are completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Over the coming weeks they are consulting with residents to make sure you are fully aware of the works first hand.

Anyone with questions about the works should contact Wales and West Utilities on 0800 912 2999 or via enquiries@wwutilities.co.uk

Wales and West Utilities will have Customer Support Officers onsite and in the area during the works. They can be approached to answer questions.
