The Young Person Panel is open to all young people in Torbay aged 12 to 25.

We meet every half term break for two hours. We have extra meetings in the summer months.

What our group members say

“When I was in care, I didn’t feel like I was listened to or supported in a way that I wanted to be. I wanted to join the Children in Care Council so that I can share my experiences and be part of the change that helps to improve the lives of other young people in care.”

How our Children in Care Council makes a difference

The group meet with decision-makers, who are known as corporate parents. Here are just a few ways they have helped improve shape services and support for Torbay’s children and young people in care.

  • Creating promotional information about our services
The group have helped to create an animation about their ‘Journey into Care’. They’ve also created a ‘becoming cared for’ guide.
  • Representing other young people
They attended Barnardo’s and Care Leavers National Movement conference. This was to mark National Care Leavers Week.
  • Helping to shape our spaces
The group created child-friendly spaces for child protection conferences.
  • Provide training for and participation in interviews - They are trained to take part in interviews. These interviews are for new council jobs.
  • Top ten priorities of the Children in Care Council

    1. Not wanting to stand out from other young people.
    2. Building stronger relationships with social workers.
    3. Improving the way that adults listen to young people.
    4. Understanding the importance of family time.
    5. Supporting young people to be creative and take part in hobbies.
    6. Housing support for care experienced young people.
    7. Work experience opportunities for care experienced young people.
    8. Improved transition from youth mental health services to adult services.
    9. Adults improving the way they listen to young people.
    10. Being involved in training foster carers.
