We submitted a Business Case to the Local Transport Board on 17 December 2014 and secured an in principal agreement for the funding for road junction improvements and improved cycle links in the Torquay Gateway area, improving access into the town from the northern boundary to Shiphay Junction and also at Gallows Gate. Works could start as early as September 2015.

Funding of £3.4 million was in principal agreed on behalf of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal secured from central government.

Work can now start on preparing the final case submission for final programme entry, including detailed design.

This scheme widened the Marldon Road approach to the A380 Ring Road to accommodate a lengthened two lane section, providing additional queuing capacity. The additional queuing capacity was required as additional traffic is expected to use this route to connect with the South Devon Link Road. A layout of the scheme can be seen below. The work was completed in April 2016.

Preliminary General Arrangement

The aim of this scheme is to widen Newton Road, between the junctions at Shiphay lane and Lowes Bridge, using existing grass verges and land adjacent to the railway line to provide at least two lanes in both directions. The existing right turn lanes will be retained, and the left turn lane at Lowes Bridge will be lengthened and the Bus Stop improved. The pedestrian islands on Newton Road at the junctions of  Woodland Road and Regents Close will be enlarged, and the traffic signals at both junctions, as well as Shiphay Lane will be replaced during the works. The road will also be resurfaced over the length of the scheme. A layout of the proposed scheme can be seen below. The works are likely to start in 2020, with the main roadworks starting in early 2021.
