Our consultation that is asking residents for its views on how many homes are needed up to 2030 is still open.

The Government use a formula to set the Housing Need for Torbay. This formula, known as the “standard method”, sets the minimum number of new homes that areas should seek to meet. In Torbay this figure is set at between 560-600 dwellings a year

Homes could be anything from detached, semi-detached, terraced housing and bungalows to flats and apartments.

We are carrying out a review of its housing supply which is linked to the Local Plan. We want to hear from our residents about your thoughts on five options and how to meet this figure of new housing. It takes into account environmental and other constraints in the Bay, as well as where housing developments could go over the next decade.

Our priority is to make the most use of brownfield land and regenerate urban areas.

Maps and information on each of the options, including their advantages and disadvantages, are on Torbay Council’s website.

The online questionnaire is available on the Local Plan Update webpages. The consultation is open until 12 noon on Monday 28 February 2022.

Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture said: “We have had over 700 responses to this survey all ready, so thank you to those that have taken the time to complete it. If you have not yet looked, I urge you to visit our webpages and read more about the five options and complete the survey.

“We know that we face difficult choices in looking to find new land for housing and this consultation shows that. We have not yet made a decision about any of these options or sites. We really want to get views of our residents before preparing what the preferred option is."

Please visit our webpages to read more about why we are carrying out this consultation. You can also see why the Local Plan is regularly reviewed and the previous consultation on identifying sites that could be developed on.
