What does the child and family need today?

1. Earliest help and Universal Support

Best Start Family Hubs, schools, health, voluntary organisations and community support.

  • Make necessary referrals directly
  • Lead and coordinate the support plan
  • Agree support with the family
  • Review progress and step up if needs grow

2. Family help

Coordinated whole-family support where needs are emerging, multiple or complex.

  • Targeted Early help
  • Child in need
  • Family group decision making

3. Safeguarding and multi-agency child protection team

Where a child may be suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm.

Follow safeguarding procedures and contact MASH. Do not delay for consent if this may increase risk.

If family help is the right response

The family help offer: coordinated support through one Lead Practitioner, one whole-family assessment and one adaptable family plan.

1. Request

Share strengths, worries, impact, history, family voice, what has been tried and the outcome needed.

2. Family help decision

The request is reviewed and the response agreed: advice, universal support, Family Help or safeguarding.

3. Lead practitioner

A named practitioner becomes the main contact and coordinates support.

4. Assess and plan

One whole-family assessment and one adaptable plan, shaped with the family and network.

5. Review and adapt

Continue, adapt, step down or escalate as needs change.

A good request includes

  • Child and family voice and desired outcome
  • Strengths, worries, impact and recent change
