Building a balanced lunchbox

Using the food groups below can help provide the nutrients young children need for growth and development. Portion sizes should be appropriate for your child's age and appetite. Children's appetites vary and these are intended as a guide only.

Starchy energy foods

These provide energy for learning, playing and staying active.

Examples include:

  • Bread, wraps or pitta
  • Rice or couscous
  • Pasta or noodles
  • Potatoes
  • Oatcakes or crackers

Protein foods

Protein helps children grow and develop.

Examples include:

  • Chicken
  • Lean sliced meat
  • Boiled egg
  • Hummus
  • Beans, lentils and chickpeas
  • Fish such as tuna, salmon or sardines
  • Nut butters (where permitted)

Fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and fibre to support healthy growth.

Examples include:

  • Berries
  • Satsumas
  • Melon
  • Tomatoes
  • Grapes (cut lengthways)
  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber
  • Peppers

Dairy or dairy alternatives

  • Cheese
  • Milk
  • Natural yoghurt
  • Greek yoghurt

These foods help support healthy bones and teeth.

Drinks

Water is the best choice for keeping children hydrated.

Top tips for parents

  • Introduce a variety of colours, tastes and textures.
  • Cut sandwiches into fun shapes.
  • Add a small dip pot with vegetables.
  • Protect fruit in small containers.
  • Aim for fruit and vegetables across the day to help achieve 5-a-day.
  • Always cut grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthways to reduce choking risk.
