Advertising a sex establishment licence application

You will need to advertise on site and in the local newspaper if you submit an application for:

  • a new sex establishment licence
  • a variation, transfer or renewal of a sex establishment licence

When to advertise your application

Public notice

You should advertise a public notice from the day after you submit your application for 21 consecutive days.

Newspaper advert

We will check your application and let you know when to advertise in the local newspaper. You must advertise the notice in a newspaper within 7 days of making the application.

How to advertise your application 

You should display a notice which is:

  • at least A4 in size (21cm by 29.7cm)
  • on white paper
  • if handwritten: using black ink and legible text
  • if typed: using black text set to at least 16pt in size

How to display your public notice

Display your notice prominently at the premises.

Make sure it can be read easily from the exterior of the premises.

If a premises covers more than 50m2: display notices every 50 metres along the external premises boundary, next to any roads.

How to publish a notice in the local newspaper

Your newspaper notice should contain the same text as your public notice.  

You should select a newspaper that:

  • is circulated in the vicinity of the premises (preferably the Herald Express)
  • is published at least once within 10 working days of the day after you submitted your application.
