Apply for extra care housing

Find out if you can apply for ECH and make an enquiry about making an application.

It is important to establish if you are suitable for extra care housing. You need to consider a shared ownership property first if you already own a home or have savings.

To apply for a rental property within ECH you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have lived in Torbay for six of the past 12 months, or three of the past five years, or be a Torbay social care funded client.
  2. Be over the age of 18 with a long-term condition and/or:
    • in receipt of regular high levels of care
    • need support that your current or alternative accommodation would not provide
  1. You must meet Care Act 2014 Eligibility and get social care funding.
  2. You must have had a social care assessment or review within the past six months.
  3. You must be eligible for rental social housing.
  4. Have less than £125,000 in savings, investments and equity.

To apply for a rental, you will need to meet all the above. A social worker must have done a care and support assessment in the first instance. This is to understand your needs. If you already get care and support this may have already happened.

Call our customer service number on 01803 217900. You can request an assessment or discuss this option with your social worker. If you need extra care housing, we will complete an application form for you. You will go on a nomination waiting list. Priorities for the list are:

  • the level of your needs for care and support
  • how long you have been on the list

We will notify you when a place becomes available. To proceed you will then have a visit and assessment from the landlord and care provider.
