The Torbay Green Infrastructure Project is being taken forward by a partnership championed by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, Torbay Council and Natural England.
A Torbay Green Infrastructure Delivery Plan will be produced by April 2011, which will provide supporting evidence for the Torbay Core Strategy and ensure growth is accompanied by a sustainable natural environment. It will also identify strategic green infrastructure delivery mechanisms and foster partnership working towards a sustainable Torbay.
What is Green Infrastructure?
Green infrastructure (GI) is a network of multi-functional, accessible open spaces which provide multiple economic, quality of life and environmental benefits for the local community. It can include parks, gardens, woodlands, allotments, footpaths, coast and sea etc.
The delivery plan so far:
As a precursor to the year-long process of developing the Torbay Green Infrastructure Delivery Plan, a workshop was held in April 2010 to introduce Torbay Council Officers, Councillors and key stakeholders to the concept of Green Infrastructure.
In June 2010 a wider stakeholder workshop was held which aimed to draw in a wider cross-section of the community and to capture any further baseline information and any relevant existing or planned projects.
Both workshops were very successful in generating enthusiasm and a huge range of potential GI project ideas were suggested.
Four key themes have been identified which will link together and feed in to the main objectives:
- ·Biodiversity and Landscape
- ·Local Food
- ·Recreation, Travel and Health
- ·Climate Change and Water Quality
Four ‘Action Areas' have also been identified :
- ·Torquay North
- ·Cockington and Occombe
- ·Clennon Valley
- ·Brixham and the Kingswear Peninsula
Each Action Area has its own individual character, and a local vision for each area will highlight priorities and focus GI delivery.
This GI project is very much aimed at accomplishing on the ground results therefore the next step will be to begin outlining delivery of the projects.
