Jobseekers from across Torbay gained first-hand experience of a variety of construction trades through a recent workshop delivered by Build Torbay.

The free three-day programme offered an engaging and practical introduction to the construction sector, giving people not currently in education or employment a chance to discover new skills and trades, boost their confidence and explore future career opportunities.

Delivered at South Devon College, the workshop was packed with hands-on sessions led by expert lecturers. Participants had the opportunity to try their hand at carpentry, plastering, bricklaying and electrical training, as well as more modern techniques such as 2D modelling and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The mix of traditional trades and innovative technology gave learners a well-rounded and inspiring introduction to the industry.

The experience was brought to life by local employers from the Build Torbay network, who generously volunteered their time to support sessions, share their expertise and offer valuable insight into real working environments. Their involvement gave participants a unique opportunity to connect directly with industry professionals, ask questions and better understand the wide range of careers available in construction.

Build Torbay, an initiative led by Torbay Council, is dedicated to inspiring careers in construction, supporting local business growth and ensuring communities benefit from the social value created by Torbay’s major regeneration projects.

By the end of the programme, participants had achieved an impressive range of skills and knowledge. They were confidently able to use a variety of hand tools and materials safely, understood essential construction terminology and processes, and completed practical tasks across multiple trades, giving them a strong introduction to the sector.

Each learner who completed the course was provided with a full set of personal protective equipment (PPE) to take home. Those keen to pursue a career in construction were also offered tailored ongoing support, including help arranging on-site work experience and connecting them with job opportunities in the sector.

This programme shows just how powerful hands-on learning can be in building confidence and opening doors.
