Young people who take part in our participation groups have been recognised for their contribution at an awards celebration.
We held our first AQA Awards event, which recognised the achievements of seven young people who are involved with the Young Person Panel, Children in Care Council and SEND Youth Forum.
The event was an opportunity to celebrate their commitment, growth and contributions.
So far, 21 AQA Unit Award certificates have been completed, recognising a wide range of achievements including painting and decorating, woodwork, singing, and participation in youth council meetings. This reflects both the diversity of skills the young people are developing and the value of recognising learning in different forms.
The impact of the awards was clear. One young person said: “I haven’t had an award in a long time, so I felt very noticed and special.”
Parents and carers also spoke powerfully about the difference the experience has made. One parent described it as a “positive experience”.
Another parent, whose child was part of the SEND Youth Forum, said it had been a consistently positive journey, where their child had excelled within the group.
Councillor Nick Bye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “A huge well done to all our young people — your achievements are something to be incredibly proud of.
“The AQA Unit Awards provide a meaningful way to recognise young people’s efforts in participation, celebrating not just what they do, but who they are becoming through these experiences.
“If other young people feel they have something to say and can contribute, I would urge them to get involved with one of our groups.”
The Civic Mayor of Torbay, Councillor Hazel Foster, presented the certificates.
The Young Person Panel, Children in Care Council and SEND Youth Forum provide safe, supportive spaces to build confidence, develop skills and influence change.
