A number of sports clubs and groups across Torbay have benefitted from a £30,000 council windfall.
They have successfully bid for awards of up to £2,500 each under Back to Sport 2, part of our Torbay on the Move initiative to get more people, more active, more often.
The chosen organisations had to show panel members, including key partners Torbay Sport that they were widening their provision by offering new sessions for groups and participants who wouldn’t normally get active.
Funds were available for project costs such as facility hire and coaching, as well as for small capital improvements.
Our priority is to support projects working with people from disadvantaged communities. This could be a community facing socio-economic disadvantage or people with multiple needs.
Councillor Steve Darling, Leader of Torbay Council, said: “This investment will particularly benefit people who don’t usually participate in sports, which is key to our Torbay on the Move initiative to encourage more people to be more active more often.”
Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, said: “I’m pleased that so many local groups are benefitting from a share of this funding. Grassroots sport is key to good physical and mental health and wellbeing.”
Ann Kempson, from Dart Netball Club, said: “We’re thrilled to receive Back to Sport 2 funding from Torbay Council. This has allowed Dart Netball Club to set up a new Walking Netball programme which has already helped more than 20 Torbay residents become more active. Our latest recruit is 84 years old, and she loved it.”
