Are you dreaming of a Green Christmas?

If you know of a loved one who is into gardening but you can’t think of what to get them for Christmas, why not sign them up for one of our new garden waste subscriptions?

It’s the ideal present for someone who enjoys gardening and even better, it’s a present that lasts almost all year round so it’s the gift that keeps on giving!

It’s also better for the planet as Torbay Council wants to increase its recycling rate from the current 37% to 50% - and kerbside garden waste collections are a key part of helping to achieve this. The service is provided on behalf of the Council by SWISCo. All the garden waste collected is converted to compost and used on a local farm.

Leader of Torbay Council Steve Darling said: “We were really pleased to be able to introduce garden waste collections here in Torbay – so many residents told us they would like to see this service - so why not sign up yourself – or even better, buy a subscription as a Christmas present for a loved one?

“I have now had a green waste bin for 2 months, my garden has never been so tidy and it’s an inspiration to fill it every fortnight.”

Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture for Torbay Council said: “It’s the ideal gift for someone who wants to help the environment – here at Torbay Council we’re committed to doing all we can to improve recycling and reduce our carbon footprint – and the more people that sign up for garden waste the better. All the garden waste collected is turned into compost and used at a local farm so by signing up you are doing your bit for the planet!”

Garden waste subscriptions are £50 per subscription and you get a 240L size brown bin and 12 months of collections for each subscription (with each household being entitled to sign up for up to three subscriptions or three brown bins).

The following items can be put in brown bins:

• Grass cuttings
• Flowers
• Small branches up to 10cm thick
• Loose leaves
• Shrub trimmings
• Hedge trimmings
