The government announced today that Devon, including Torbay will be in Tier 2 of the local COVID restrictions until at least 16 December. This is to help tackle the spread of coronavirus in Torbay.

Dr Caroline Dimond, Torbay’s Director of Public Health, said:

“We have all worked together to slow the rise in cases over the last few weeks, with most parts of Torbay now back below the average for England. However, the Government decisions on tiers looks at not only rate of infection but case detection rates and pressure on local NHS services. Until 2 December, please continue to follow the national restrictions, and plan for how you can follow the tier 2 guidance.

“The main action everyone can take to help is to make space, so we can make Torbay safe from COVID again. That means keeping 2 metres apart from people who are not in your household or your bubble, and meeting outdoors where possible. Keeping your distance, and washing your hands, makes all the difference in reducing the spread of infection.”  

Councillor Steve Darling, Leader of Torbay Council, said:

“Following the new tier rules from 2 December it is crucial to protect the NHS and save lives. Collectively, we’ve brought the rate COVID was spreading down and we need to build on that work. We need to keep following the rules both now and from next Wednesday so we protect the most vulnerable people.

“Sir Simon Stevens, Chief Executive Officer of the NHS, has identified the South West has less capacity. Sadly this is translating into the Nightingale Hospital in Exeter is being stood up and harsher measures for the whole county.

Darren Cowell, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “We are processing business grant applications for the current lockdown, and will be updating our package of support for businesses over the coming days as we get more guidance. Our High Streets will be reopening next week, and I’d ask that people space out their visits, rather than rush back on the first day. We’ve extended last year’s “pay for an hour, stay for the day” parking scheme to every day from 3 to 24 December inclusive to help people spread out their visits.”
