Steps to end your tenancy
Check the rules about notice periods and any special steps for ending your tenancy.
Provide written notice to your landlord or letting agent. The notice period is usually specified in your tenancy agreement.
Ensure the property is clean and in good condition. Address any repairs or maintenance issues.
Arrange a time to return the keys to your landlord or letting agent.
Make sure all rent payments are up to date and settle any outstanding bills.
How much notice to give
Following the changes under the Renters Rights Act, you must now give 2 months' notice.
If my landlord refuses to accept my notice
If your landlord says no to your notice, ask a local housing advisor or legal expert for help.
Leaving before the notice period ends
You may be able to negotiate an earlier end date. Landlords can no longer object.
