Brixham Road reopening is on track

The closure and diversion have been in place for over two months. Feedback has been that less disruption to traffic has been experienced than originally thought.

We recognise the impact this has had, however we are pleased that feedback has been that less disruption to traffic has been experienced than originally thought. We also meet weekly with the contractor to get regular updates and react to any immediate concerns.

The work remains on track and the plan is still for Brixham Road to re-open at the end of March 2023. After the Easter Holidays traffic lights will be in place to complete the works. Traffic management will also be used while work on the Long Road and Windy Corner junctions take place. This will cause delays on Brixham Road, but Persimmon will review the impact and timing of the works with our Highways Department to minimise disruption. Appropriate signage will be installed to manage traffic.

We will update on the timing of works and traffic management solutions towards the end of March. All updates on the road closure can be found on our website.

Budget approved – 2023/24

A balanced Revenue Budget of £131 million and Capital Plan of £90 million for next financial year was approved by Full Council this month.

Following consultation, feedback received was that residents supported most of the proposals put forward. Some changes were made, these include:

  • Due to the current economic climate which may impact sponsorship levels, additional money will be allocated to support the delivery of the English Riviera Airshow.
  • Admiral Swimming Pool in Brixham and Swim Torquay will each receive a £12,000 towards their ongoing costs.
  • £100,000 will support a new role which will be focussed on improving all our town centres.
  • £50,000 for additional resources to support the Planning Service especially around enforcement and heritage works.
  • £3million borrowing within the Capital Plan for community-led affordable housing schemes. This will enable local organisations to buy and improve properties for affordable housing.

All the information about this year’s budget can be found our Budget webpages.

Changing Places facility set for Brixham

Torbay was one of 191 councils to receive a share of £23.5million government funding to enhance the lives of disabled people, with 531 new Changing Places toilets to be built in England.

Paignton has had a Changing Place toilet on Paignton seafront since 2018 and Brixham will now also be getting one thanks to this funding.

These highly specialised, larger accessible toilets for severely disabled people, are fitted with equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsula toilets and space for carers.

The Changing Place facility for Brixham will be in the Bank Lane car park.

New lights set for Brixham harbourside

SWISCo and our illumination contractor Future Technical Systems, working with Brixham Town Council, Chamber of Commerce and Ward Councillors have agreed improvements to the current illuminations around Brixham Inner Harbour.

The plan is to replace the current festoon lighting and extend it around the fish quay building. The plans also include looking at illuminating the Harbour wall, below King Street.

Work on installing the improved illuminations will start at the end of April 2023.
