Identification documents for registering a birth

Find out which identification documents you need to provide when registering a birth.

Identification requirements

Important - This requirement starts on 9 November 2026. If your appointment is before this date, you do not need to provide these identification documents.

From 9 November 2026, anyone registering a birth must provide evidence of their identity.

The requirement applies to the person or people registering the birth. We cannot complete the registration if satisfactory identification is not provided at the appointment.

You must provide either:

  • one document from the primary identification list; or
  • two documents from the secondary identification list

If you are unsure whether your documents will be accepted, contact the Register Office before attending your appointment

Who must provide identification

  • If the parents are married or in a civil partnership - Only one parent is required to register the birth. The parent attending the appointment and registering the birth must provide the required identification documents.
  • If the parents are not married or in a civil partnership - If you want both parents' details included on the birth registration, both parents must attend the appointment and provide the required identification documents.
