We have formally handed over the keys to the Old Monastery to Paignton Monastery CIC, marking a significant milestone in the community-led regeneration of the historic site.

The announcement comes following support from our Cabinet in December, where they approved the acquisition of the monastery by residents for a nominal sum of £1 in response to strong representation from the local community.

The acquisition was subject to several key conditions, including the formation of a legal entity, Paignton Monastery CIC, a restrictive covenant to ensure the property’s Land Registry Title would be limited to community-based operations, and an overage clause, which ensures that, should the property’s use change in future, any uplift in value will be returned to the council.

Our teams have since worked closely with Paignton Monastery CIC on the successful completion of the transfer, with teams helping to facilitate site visits and inspections to support the process.

Councillor David Thomas, Leader of Torbay Council, said:

"I'm delighted that the local community has now officially taken ownership of Paignton Monastery. This marks an exciting new chapter for this historic site and a real opportunity for it to become a thriving hub for local people.

"We recognised how passionate the local community was about protecting this much-loved building and seeing it put to positive use. I'm pleased that we've been able to work closely together to achieve an outcome that reflects the community's vision and our responsibility to manage council assets responsibly.

"This is a really positive step forward for Paignton and community-led regeneration. I'm looking forward to seeing the monastery develop as a valued community asset."

Paignton Monastery CIC added:

"We are extremely proud to become owners of such a historic building, and would like to place on record our gratitude to Torbay Council for allowing us this opportunity. 

"It is such an exciting project for all involved, one we are sure will be successful for both local residents and businesses alike. We are hoping it sets the standard that could be used for other buildings at risk in the area."

Before the building can open to the community, a programme of internal and external works must be completed to address existing issues and ensure the site is safe. The building will then open in phases, with different areas becoming accessible to the public as work progresses and spaces are assessed as safe.

Paignton Monastery community inauguration event

On Sunday 16 August Paignton Monastery CIC will be running a free community inauguration event to celebrate the return of the building to the local community.

The event will run from 11am to 4pm, and will be a chance to:

• Speak to Paignton Monastery CIC Directors, ask questions about the project, and share your thoughts about the building's future.
• See the current condition of the building (where there is access to do so safely).
• Help out in the grounds where work has already begun.
