Hundreds of primary school pupils from across Torbay have taken part in the Let’s Build challenge, helping to inspire the next generation and showcase career opportunities within the construction industry.
A total of 240 Year 4 children from across three schools – Shiphay Learning Academy, Roselands Primary School and Oldway Primary School - took part in the week-long challenge organised by Build Torbay.
Build Torbay is a Torbay Council initiative which inspires careers in construction, supports local business growth and ensures local communities benefit from the social value from Torbay’s transformational regeneration projects.
The Let’s Build challenge is now in its second year and aims to raise awareness of careers in construction, challenge stereotypes and encourage young people to think creatively about their future aspirations.
Children were given the challenge of reimagining the future of Paignton Picture House, one of the oldest cinemas in Europe. They were given a fictional brief and asked to redesign the building to create a profitable business or attraction using eco-friendly or sustainable materials.
Over the course of the week, pupils met a range of industry professionals and Build Torbay members who shared insights into their roles, offered practical advice and supported the children as they developed their ideas. Pupils were also given the opportunity to see inside the Paignton Picture House, which is currently being restored, via a live video link.
Using what they had learned over the week, each group created a new concept for the building. At the end of the week, the children presented their concepts to a panel of employers from the construction and related sectors, who judged the final proposals.
Peter Everitt, Chair of Build Torbay and Regional Bid Manager at Kier Group, said: ''It has been inspiring to see pupils engage so enthusiastically with the Let's Build challenge. We’re hugely grateful to the dedicated school staff and Build Torbay members who gave their time and expertise to make the project such a success. Their support has played a vital role in creating a memorable experience that not only broadens horizons but helps young people see the exciting opportunities available within the construction sector.”
Cllr Chris Lewis, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth at Torbay Council, said: ‘‘The Let’s Build challenge has once again shown the incredible creativity and potential of young people in Torbay. By giving pupils the opportunity to work on a practical brief, meet industry professionals and develop their own ideas, we are helping to break down stereotypes around construction and inspire future career ambitions.''
The Paignton Picture House is one of Europe’s earliest purpose-built cinemas. It is a Grade II* listed building that is recognised for its historic and architectural significance. Torbay Council is working with Arts Council England and Paignton Picture House Trust to deliver the full restoration of the Paignton Picture House, as part of the wider regeneration of Paignton Town Centre.
