England Fan Zone in Abbey Park

News Release PR9517 - published on 19 June 2026

Some news stories have said that a huge Fan Zone for 10,000 people will be set up in Torre Abbey Meadows if England get through the World Cup. This is not true.

We have asked for these stories to be taken down because they are wrong and could make people expect something much bigger than what is actually being planned.

We know this is an exciting time for everyone, and we want people to enjoy supporting England and all the other teams throughout the tournament.

What is really happening

If England get through the first part of the tournament, a local business owner, supported by our Events Team is looking at having a much smaller Fan Zone in Abbey Park, not Torre Abbey Meadows.

  • The Fan Zone would hold up to 1,500 people, not 10,000.
  • The 10,000 number is only about the park’s alcohol licence, not how many people can go to an event.
  • We will only know if the Fan Zone can happen after the group games finish on Sunday 28 June.
  • If it goes ahead, it will start being promoted from Monday 29 June.

The Fan Zone would be free, family‑friendly, and would have a bar and a couple of food stalls run by local businesses.

If England reach the final

If England make it all the way to the final, we will then talk about whether a bigger event could be held. But that is a long way off, and no decisions have been made.

Supporting Local Businesses

Lots of businesses around the Bay have already set up their own places to watch the World Cup. These are brilliant spaces, and we encourage everyone to keep enjoying and supporting them.

Our Priority

We want everyone in Torbay to enjoy the World Cup safely, sensibly, and in a way that supports our local community.

Advice and Support

While big sporting events can be exciting, we know they are not enjoyable for everyone. For some people, times like the World Cup can increase stress at home, and this can sadly lead to a rise in domestic abuse.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse in Torbay:

  • You are not alone, and it is not your fault.
  • Support is available locally for anyone affected – including adults, children, and families.
  • Help is available whether the abuse is physical, emotional, financial, or controlling behaviour.
  • You can reach out to local specialist services, talk to someone you trust, or contact national helplines at any time.
  • If you ever feel unsafe or in immediate danger, please contact emergency services.

Help, advice and support are available from a range of places including the Are you Ok? website.

Torbay stands against Hate and Abuse

Torbay is an inclusive community. We do not tolerate hate or abuse against anyone, regardless of their background, identity, what football team they support, or who they love. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected.

If you experience or witness hate or abuse:

  • You can report it to local support services or national reporting lines.
  • You can speak to someone you trust or reach out to organisations that specialise in supporting victims of hate incidents.
  • Help is available whether the abuse is verbal, physical, online, or targeted at someone’s race, religion, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Read more about what a Hate Crime is and why you should report it.

This is how you can report a hate crime to the police.

Remember if you or your family are in immediate danger don't be afraid to call the police on 999.
