An estimated 15,000 people flocked to Torquay’s waterfront for a magical opening night of festive lights and fireworks.

Torquay’s seafront and harbourside were transformed into a dazzling spectacle on Friday 28 November as the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail celebrated its best-ever opening night, attracting crowds of thousands to the waterfront areas.

The evening’s festivities culminated in a spectacular firework display, marking the start of what promises to be the most exciting year yet for this much-loved event. The opening night extravaganza was a collaborative effort between us, the English Riviera BID Company, and Torquay Independent Business Owners (TIBO) made up of local harbourside businesses, showcasing the strength of partnership in delivering unforgettable experiences for residents and visitors.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Torre Abbey’s Christmas Market also opened its doors on Friday, drawing crowds to its historic grounds for the enchanting Alive with Light Show. Families, friends, and even four-legged companions spent hours soaking up the vibrant atmosphere, capturing magical moments, and creating cherished Christmas memories.

Now in its fourth year, the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail continues to grow in popularity and ambition. This year the 1–5-mile accessible trail introduces exciting new features, including a real ice rink, opening this weekend (Saturday 6 December), alongside stunning new interactive light installations that promise to make this the most spectacular trail yet.

Cllr Jackie Thomas, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events and Corporate Services at Torbay Council, said; “We want to thank everyone who came out and supported the first night of our Bay of Illumination Trail. It was fantastic to see so many families, friends, and visitors enjoying the lights and festivities together. Please keep supporting our festive programme – including the exciting new real ice rink opening this weekend.”

Carolyn Custerson, CEO of the English Riviera BID Company Ltd, said; “Events like the Bay of Lights are not only a fantastic way to celebrate the festive season, but they also play a vital role in boosting our local economy. By attracting thousands of visitors to Torquay’s waterfront, we’re supporting local businesses and showcasing the English Riviera as a vibrant, year-round destination.”
