Residents are advised that from Monday 17 July a full reconstruction of the road on part of Shiphay Lane, Torquay will be taking place.
The works which are expected to take nine-weeks to complete will see sections of Shiphay Lane closed to all vehicles.
Affected residents and businesses have received a letter advising them of the road closure, alternative parking locations and information on what action they need to take ahead of the works starting.
During the closure a signed diversion route will be in place directing vehicles along Shiphay Avenue, Dart Avenue, Exe Hill and Collaton Road before bringing you back to Shiphay Lane, and the reverse of that the other way round.
There will be no disruption to the pavements so pedestrians will still be able to walk along Shiphay Lane.
To minimise disruption the reconstruction works will take place in two phases. Phase one which will take about six-weeks will take place between Oak Park Avenue and Dairy Hill. During this phase Dairy Hill will remain open to traffic and pedestrians. The second phase will cover the remainder of the road from Dairy Hill to the Devon Dumpling. At this point Dairy Hill will be closed to traffic and pedestrians.
We do recognise there is never a good time to close a road. It is hoped that by doing most of the work over the school summer holidays which sees traffic in the area significantly reduced the works can be completed as quickly as possible.
The reconstruction of a road, requires contractors to dig down over two feet, remove the current road surface and then build it up again, finishing with two or three layers of tarmac.
During the closure period, waste and recycling collections will remain the same with residents advised to put their residual waste bins and recycling boxes and bags out on their normal collection days.
Anyone who frequently travels along Shiphay Lane, or surrounding area are advised to add some extra time to their journey and if possible, consider taking an alternative route.
Further information on the works can be found on the Shiphay Lane road works page.
