On Thursday 14 April 2023, electors in Brixham had their say in a Parish Poll.

They were asked two questions:

  1. Do you wish to leave the jurisdiction of Torbay Council?
  2. Do you wish Brixham to join the South Hams District?

Anne-Marie Bond, Returning Officer for Torbay Council, said: “54 per cent of voters said they did not wish to leave Torbay Council. 46 per cent said they did wish to leave.

“54 per cent of voters said they did not wish to join South Hams District Council. 46 per cent said they did.”

The turnout was 4.46 per cent.

The poll was triggered by a request from 11 electors. Whilst in some ways a poll is like an election, there are some notable differences, with no provision in the legislation for poll cards nor postal votes. The cost of running the poll will be met by Brixham Town Council, which is anticipated to cost approximately £10,000-£15,000.
