Residents in Torbay are being encouraged to remember victims of genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday 27 January 2023.
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) leads the annual remembrance of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The Civic Mayor of Torbay, Councillor Mandy Darling will be attending a Holocaust Memorial Service alongside the Torbay Friends of Israel. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future.
The Civic Mayor of Torbay, Councillor Mandy Darling, said: "It is important that we have this dedicated time to remember the Holocaust and its millions of victims and subsequent genocides and that we learn about this dark chapter in history. Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us that even in the UK, we must continue to challenge prejudice and hateful language.”
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 is Ordinary People, raising awareness that ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in other genocides that took place.
