Update on Torwood Street Roadworks

Update on the roadworks, including an update on issue with a water main and a parking promotion in place until the end of February.

The roadworks on Torwood Street have now been in place for four weeks and have been progressing well.

Over the past week though a major issue with a South West Water main has been uncovered. South West Water have been spending many hours trying to find a fix. It appears a water main was imbedded into the concrete that needs to be replaced, maybe even since the 1940’s when the concrete road was laid. South West Water are working hard to find a way of lowering this main without causing disruption to those living in the area.

Unfortunately this work has meant the contractors, SWH Ltd, cannot progress until the issue has been fixed. They plan to be back next week to carry on with the reconstruction.

To support those businesses in the surrounding area we have also lowered the cost of parking in the three car parks around Torwood Street. From today, Friday 4 February, you will be able to pay for one hour, stay for three, in Meadfoot Road, Harbour and Beacon Quay car parks between 9 am and 5 pm. That will be £1.40 (cash only) for three hours and will be in place until the end of February.

Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, said: “As with works like this, when you start to dig up roads you can find things that weren’t expected. A contingency is in the project plan for things just like this and we hope that the work can still be completed by the end of March.

“I am also glad to say that we can provide this special offer in our car parks around the area of these roadworks. Please make the most of this and remember, you can still access the businesses on Torwood Street. The pavement has not been impacted by the roadworks.”
