Yesterday (Monday 3rd January) Network Rail started their work to replace the bridge over the railway on Torbay Road, by Wheatridge Lane. These works will take about nine weeks to complete and will be in place until Tuesday 8 March 2022.
There will be diversions in place, with the main being for those travelling between Torquay and Paignton who are strongly advised is to use the Ring Road diversion. Please only use the local diversion along Wheatridge Lane if access is needed to properties or businesses in the area. Pedestrians are being advised to use Wheatridge Lane as well.
The no.12, 22 and Gold Stagecoach bus services are being impacted and more information on this can be found on our webpages.
The other large scheme also starting this week is the full reconstruction of part of Torwood Street. From Thursday 6 January 2022 Torwood Street will be shut from the Clocktower to the junction with Parkhill Road and The Terrace. This full reconstruction will take about 12 weeks to complete.
The diversion for this scheme will take you along Victoria Parade, past the Imperial Hotel, along Parkhill Road and down Meadfoot Road.
The pavement along Torwood Street will remain open so access to all the businesses can still be maintained.
Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, said: "There really is never a good time to do any major highway schemes, let alone two at the same time. We do not take the decision for closing roads lightly and we apologise for the inconvenience and disruption these works will cause. We will keep you informed on how these schemes are progressing and more information can be found on our webpages.”
"Please bear these roadworks in mind as you travel between Torquay and Paignton and around the Harbour area in Torquay. Think about if there is another route to take to get you to your destination and add some more time on your journey in case of delay's."
More information about both of these schemes and how this will impact the busses that use these roads can be found on our webpages.
