We are part of a new nationwide adoption campaign called #YouCanAdopt, launched this week.
The campaign aims to dispel myths around who is eligible to adopt and highlight that, especially during the COVID pandemic, there are still children out there who are looking for their new family.
Drawing on decades of expertise in adoption, the #YouCanAdopt campaign is the first time this coalition of national, regional and voluntary adoption agencies have come together to raise awareness of adoption. Adopt South West is part of the coalition of National, Regional and Voluntary adoption agencies across the country, supported by the Department for Education (DfE), who have joined forces to launch a nationwide recruitment campaign to raise awareness of adoption.
The campaign launches as the number of adoptions in England has fallen by a third in the past four years.
People can adopt from a variety of backgrounds, including single parents, people from all religions, people from the LGBTQ+ and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.
The adoption process has changed over the years and there is a lot more support available.
Ultimately, most people can have the qualities to be a good parent and the campaign wants to support people to feel confident that they are capable to adopting.
Councillor Steve Darling, Leader of Torbay Council, said: “As someone who was adopted as a baby, I take a personal interest in this campaign as from first-hand experience I know what it means to find a forever family to provide you with security and permanency. Adoption is one of the most rewarding ways that you can make a difference to a child’s life”.
