Road and gritting update

After continuing treatments on our roads, including ploughing overnight, most primary routes are now passable with care, although travel is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Every effort is being made to treat highways where there are abandoned vehicles so they are can be recovered more quickly, but motorists should only recover their cars when it is safe to do so. There are five gritters available, one of which is not able to spread salt and these are currently moving into secondary routes and gritting some residential areas.

In addition, manual workers are clearing and treating footways in town centre and shopping areas, as well as in residential estates. Existing staff have been deployed as this additional resource and will continue to support the clear up whilst it is needed.

The winter forecast is for rising temperatures which is likely to help clear the roads. The situation will be closely monitored and gritting will resume in primary routes if and when it is required.
