It’s not too late to protect yourself and your family against flu.

Catch it, bin it, kill it is a Public Health England campaign seeking to stop the spread of flu germs, by catching coughs and sneezes in a tissue and washing your hands thoroughly.  It’s a simple thing to do, but it works.

Councillor Jackie Stockman, Executive Lead for Health and Wellbeing, said: “If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, it is very important to catch it, bin it, kill it to prevent the spread of the illness. Also, keep warm and drink plenty of fluids, wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water, and avoid unnecessary contact with others.

“At this time of year, make sure you keep an eye out for elderly relatives and neighbours by ensuring they stay warm and visit a pharmacist at the first sign of a cough or cold.

“We’re right into flu season now but there’s still time to be vaccinated. Vaccination is the best defence against flu, and you can get a free flu vaccination from your GP or pharmacist if you’re at increased risk from the effects of flu.”

You can receive a free flu vaccination if you fall in to one of the following categories:

• aged 65 and over
• pregnant
• you have a chronic health condition like COPD, bronchitis, diabetes, heart or kidney disease or have had a stroke
• you are a carer (if you receive a carer's allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill)
