Statement regarding funding for fishermens’ equipment

There’s been some recent speculation and inaccuracies about the funding of equipment for local fishermen.

In November 2017 Torbay Council agreed to make an application to the Marine Management Organisation (through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund) to finance the purchase of Personal Floatation Devices equipped with Locator Beacons, and to develop a delivery scheme in partnership with the local fishing industry. This was to ensure that all local fishermen would have access to the potentially lifesaving pieces of equipment at no cost to themselves or the local taxpayer.

In order to raise the necessary EMFF 'match funding' the Council has now asked for assistance from the local fishing industry. The amount required is between £13,000 to £25,000, depending upon the equipment specification. The outcome of this request is awaited.
