We have taken action to reduce delays at utility roadworks on Dartmouth Road

News Release PR0 - published on 17 September 2026

Information relating to councillors and Council meetings are currently unavailable. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Our highways team has taken urgent action to improve traffic flows after reports of long delays as a result of traffic management at the Wales & West Utilities gas works in Dartmouth Road, Galmpton, on Monday, 14 September 2026.

Highways engineers from SWISCo visited the site and have instructed the contractors to make a number of changes. These include reducing the length of the works area and ensuring the signals are operated manually from 6.30am to 8pm from Monday to Sunday. The contractors will monitor traffic during these times and change the lights sequence depending on the queues.

These measures were put into place on Wednesday 16 September, and appear to have had a positive impact on traffic flows through the area. Our highways team will continue to monitor the situation.

Wales & West Utilities is carrying out these essential utility works to replace ageing metal pipes with modern plastic ones as part of a major upgrade programme.

It could not be carried out over the summer, and due to the nature of the work it cannot be done overnight because of the disturbance that would cause to nearby homes.

The traffic management is needed to keep workers and road users safe at the site. We know there is never a good time for roadworks and we will continue to work with Wales & West Utilities and their contractors to keep disruption to a minimum.

To help the traffic flows, please let buses pull out and you should comply with the lights to take your turn and prevent unnecessary traffic build-ups. Allow more time for your journey, if possible travel at less busy times and consider car-sharing.

The rolling two-way traffic lights will be operating on Dartmouth Road between the junction with Brixham Road and Churston Station for this phase of works until 20 November.

Road closures have been set up to reduce the number of junctions affected by temporary traffic lights.

 These are:

  • Manor Vale Road from its junctions with Dartmouth Road to outside No. 3 Manor Vale Road
  • Warborough Road from its junctions with Dartmouth Road to outside No. 18 Warborough Road

Enquiries about these works should go to Wales & West Utilities on 0800 912 2999 or by email to enquiries@wwutilities.co.uk. In a gas emergency you should call 0800 111 999.
