To consider a report that supports residents and protects them from falling into poverty and to make recommendations to Cabinet.

Minutes:

The Board received a presentation from the Director of Public Health on ‘Turning the Tide of Poverty – Opportunities and Challenges’.  The presentation set out the following six policy areas:

·         Give every child the best start in life;

·         Enable all children and young people and adults to maximise their capabilities and have control over their lives;

·         Create fair employment and good work for all;

·         Ensure healthy standards of living for all;

·         Create and develop healthy and sustainable places and communities; and

·         Strengthen the role of ill health prevention.

The Director of Public Health detailed the work that was already underway and set out the potential for future opportunities if a place based planning approach was adopted.

The Board considered the six policy areas and determined that a task and finish group on each policy area would enable members to meet with partners and fully analyse the effects of the current work and what other work could be done to further address the issues of poverty.

Resolved

·         Create fair employment and good work for all;

·         Ensure healthy standards of living for all;

·         Create and develop healthy and sustainable places and communities; and

·         Strengthen the role of ill health prevention.
