As part of Torquay Museum's Explorer Season, Mike Holgate will give a talk about Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott.

This presentation about Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott will take the audience through the explorers' united and separate attempts to reach the South Pole, interspersed with stories about the Shackleton family’s involvement in the scandalous ‘Irish Crown Jewels Mystery’ and the Scott family’s links to the ‘Titanic Tragedy’. Also featured are the stories of South Devon men who took part in expeditions alongside Scott and Shackleton whose lives were destined to end prematurely and tragically ten years apart in Antarctica.
The illustrated talk’s introduction and finale will feature songs inspired by the exploits of the polar heroes performed in the style of the Edwardian music hall.

Mike is the author of twenty history books including offbeat accounts of famous figures Agatha Christie, Napoleon Bonaparte, John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee and Jack the Ripper. For several years he was a feature writer for Devon Life and his research has been used in programmes produced by BBC Radio Devon and Granada Television.
