If you are planning to start up a childminding business that provides food as part of your service, you do not need to register separately as a food business with us as this will happen automatically when you register with Ofsted Opens in a new window.
After being registered as a food business you may have a food safety inspection which would be carried out by us. If your childminding business does need an inspection, a food safety officer will contact you to arrange a suitable time to visit. Our officer will talk about food hygiene and food safety to help make sure the food you give to any children is prepared, stored and handled safely. For more information see Childminders registration and food Opens in a new window.
All food handlers must be trained according to their type of work activity. The usual way for food handlers to be trained is to gain a Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety in Catering (formerly a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate). See the training course leaflet for local course providers.

As a childminder you must put in place food safety management documentation. The Food Standards Agency has produced Safer food, better business for childminders Opens in a new window; the pack gives simple, straightforward advice on food safety, including information on feeding babies and children, cooking, cleaning, chilling and looking after a child with a food allergy. Download and complete the pack and keep up to date for inspection.
