We are seeking a voluntary independent member to join our Audit Committee. 

The Audit Committee provides a key source of assurance on our audit and corporate governance arrangements.  It is responsible for the council’s internal and external audit activity, risk management, treasury management, financial accounts, maintaining an effective control environment and wider corporate governance.

We are seeking an individual who shares our values, has a commitment to continuous improvement and a desire to deliver better outcomes for Torbay’s residents.

The voluntary independent member would be expected to act impartially at all times and have experience in finance, accountancy, corporate governance, risk management or audit, and be able to analyse and discuss complex information.

Councillor Robert Loxton, Chairman of the Audit Committee, said: “An independent person often brings a new approach to committee discussions and would be hugely beneficial to the Audit Committee.”

The Audit committee currently meets five times a year.  However, it is anticipated that the role will require in the region of 6 days per year which would include meeting preparation and attendance. You will be provided with training on the administration and organisation of the Council and the role of an independent person.

Anyone who has been a councillor or officer of Torbay Council or close friend or relative of such a person cannot be considered. Applicants cannot be actively engaged in politics or be a member of a political party. You would also be precluded from applying if you have any significant business dealings with us, have a criminal conviction or are an undischarged bankrupt.
