Commitment to Carers

Decision Maker: Director of Adult Services and Housing

Decision status: Recommendations approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

That the Commitment to Carers ‘in everything we do, we will take carers into account’ document attached as Appendix 1 to this record of decision be approved.

Reasons for the decision:

To demonstrate the Council and other Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) Partner’s commitment to carers across the whole of Devon.

Alternative options considered:

None

Implementation:

This decision may be implemented immediately.

Information:

This document has been devised with Carers Leads and Carers across the STP footprint (which included Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council). It is based upon the NHE Commitment to Carers and the Triangle of Care, both of which are part of Torbay Carers Strategy which was approved by the Elected Mayor in June 2018.

In working towards the Commitment, each area will have its own action plan, which for Torbay will be extracted from the Torbay’s Carers’ Strategy Action Plan. The only new commitment is for Carers Awareness Training to be a part of staff induction. Given that many services work with Carers or work with the public so could help identify Carers, and also that many staff are Carers themselves, this is a reasonable commitment that would help in the achievement of the Carers Strategy.
