Decision:
To agree that the relevant area for the purpose of school admission consultations be defined as the area within the Torbay boundary.
Reasons for the decision:
The Council is under a statutory duty to consult upon and determine the relevant area for the purpose of school admission arrangements consultations.
Alternative options considered:
Not to determine the relevant area would leave the Council in breach of its statutory duties.
Implementation:
These arrangements will be implemented immediately.
Information:
Under the School Standards & Framework Act 1998, local authorities are required to establish a ‘Relevant Area’ in which admission authorities must consult regarding their admission arrangements. The Education (Relevant Areas for Consultation on Admission Arrangements) Regulations 1999 requires local authorities to consult on these proposals every two years.
Consultation must last at least 30 days. The following officers of the Council, individuals and organisations were consulted:
· Torbay Schools
· Neighbouring Local Education Authorities
· Own admission authority primary schools within 1.6 kilometres of the Torbay boundary
· Own admission authority secondaryschools within 4.8 kilometres of the Torbay boundary
