Safety of Pedestrians/Road Users Cricketfield Road/Barton Road, Torquay
Sandwiched between a number of schools, including, Torre School, Torquay Academy and both boys and girls grammar schools this junction has a high level of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, particularly heavy at the start and end of the school day. Traffic tends to approach this junction at speed, often shooting right across the centre of the junction, not stopping or slowing to consider other traffic or pedestrians.
Crossing this junction can be challenging due to the limited visibility, (coming from Cricketfield Road) and the lack of pedestrian refuges inn the middle of the roads. The speed of the traffic also makes it very difficult to judge the appropriate safety points to cross and there have been a number of incidents and near misses.
The age of the children walking to and from school in this area
is wide-ranging as Torre School is a primary school and Torquay
Academy is a secondary school. Parents, guardians , carers and
local residents are very anxious about the safety of the children
and all pedestrians. They request the Council to act now to prevent
a very serious incident.
