A decade on since the DIY Streets Ellacombe Road project, we are again working with the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, to invite residents of the street to help review and improve how the street design scheme is working.

Through a series of activities that will take place throughout autumn 2021, all residents of the street are invited to take part  – firstly to help identify what has and hasn’t worked to date; and then to help refresh the approach with ideas for how to make the street work better for current and future journeys, and to help make walking and cycling on and near to Ellacombe Road safer and easier than ever.

This will culminate in a street party and trial on Saturday 30 October, where some updates will be piloted/trialled for a day, reflecting some of the design inputs from people who have participated, with chances to feedback before designs are developed into proposals for what could happen next. During this event, the street will be closed to traffic between the hours of 10am and 3pm (emergency access and access for residents who need it will be retained, but we hope to limit the number of vehicles driving through, so that the street can be enjoyed by residents, used to chat to neighbours, and so they we can all test out some of your design ideas).

We’d love to hear your thoughts, so please come along to our events.

If you are unable to make any of the events but want to be involved you can tell us your thoughts using our community map.

Events

We need your help to make Ellacombe Road better, safer, and healthier for everyone. You are invited to get involved at each of three stages, including a one-day pilot and street party:

1. Collaborative Street Design Review

Sunday 26 September Next to Ellacombe Play Park 2pm to 4pm

This is your chance to tell us what has worked well, what needs improving and to show us where you imagine the best changes could be made on Ellacombe Road.

2. Co-Design Workshop

Wednesday 13 October Next to Ellacombe Play Park 5pm to 7pm

This will be a hands-on event to help co-design the changes before we develop and trial some of them. This may include changes to road alignments or priorities of use, as well as carriageway patterns, planters, surfacing, cycle parking, pocket parks, and other fun stuff.

3. Street Party and Trial

Saturday 30 October  Next to Ellacombe Play Park 11am to 2pm

The key concepts developed following the co-design event will be shared and a number of ideas will be trialled with community members, using light-touch and on-street prototyping techniques. This event will also invite feedback from local residents and stakeholders, businesses and the wider community, to inform the next steps for the street design proposals.

You can attend any of these events or you can also email any suggestions and views to Chris Gomm at engagement@torbay.gov.uk.
