You must stay at home. The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.

When to book a test

Find out more about when you need to book a coronavirus test.

Only people with symptoms of COVID-19 need to book a test unless you have been advised otherwise by a healthcare professional. For example, if your child has symptoms you only need to book a test for your child and not for yourself.

You need to self-isolate and get a test, even if you have had COVID-19 before. This is because we do not know at the moment how people develop immunity to COVID-19.

The quicker you get a test the better. You need to take a test in the first eight days of having symptoms. If you are not able to take a test in the first eight days of your symptoms, you, and your household, should follow the actions to take if your test is positive.

The test will tell you if you have the virus at the time of being tested. It will not tell you if you have previously had COVID-19 (it will not test for antibodies). Read the Government’s advice about antibodies.
