Testing for people with COVID-19 symptoms

Find out more about when you need to book a coronavirus test.

When to book a test

If you experience any COVID-19 symptoms or have been advised to book a test by a healthcare professional, it’s vital you do so straight away.

You must have a test in the first eight days of having symptoms. If you cannot do this, you and your household must self-isolate for ten days from the day your symptoms start.

COVID-19 symptoms

  • New and continuous cough
  • High temperature
  • Loss of, or change to, your sense of taste or smell

How to book a test

Book a free COVID-19 test online or call 119 to book one.

  • At a testing centre: you will be given an appointment in Torbay and be told which centre to go to.
  • Home testing: if you cannot get to a test centre you will be sent a home testing kit. It should arrive the day after you order it. If you order a home test kit on day seven of having symptoms you must order it before 3pm or it will be too late. Return your test as soon as possible.

What to do next

You must self-isolate:

  • While you wait for your test result
  • If you test positive, and for ten days from when your symptoms start
  • Even if you’ve had COVID-19 before, because you can get it again
  • If you cannot get a test within eight days of having symptoms, self-isolate for ten days from the day your symptoms start

Self-isolating is a legal requirement. It means that you must not leave your home for the specified period of time stated by NHS Test and Trace. Fines can be issued to those who do not adhere.
