If someone living in your home is a student or student nurse and without them only one ‘adult’ lives there, you can apply for a 25 percent discount on your council tax.
If all the people living in the property are not counted you may be able to get a 50 percent reduction or you may not have to pay anything.
You are classed as a student for council tax if:
- You are 18 or over and on a full time course at college, university or similar
- You are a student nurse on a full time course at college, university or similar
- A full time course is one that:
- Lasts for at least one academic year
- Requires at least 24 weeks of study a year
- Requires at least 21 hours of study per week
- A full time course is one that:
- You are under 20 years old and taking a course of further education
- A course of further education is one that:
- Is not above A level standard
- Must be at least three months long
- Requires at least 12 hours of study per week

- On a course which when completed will lead to registration under the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979

A school leaver for council tax is someone who:
- Is under 20 years old
- Left school or college between 1 May and 31 October
- Was taking a course of further education
If they reach the 20 years old before 1 November the discount will stop on their 20th birthday.
